About the Role

The Market Abuse Monitoring Officer is responsible for the day-to-day surveillance, investigation, escalation, and documentation of potential market abuse in crypto-asset markets, in line with MiCA Article 92, ESMA expectations, and internal policies.

This is a hands-on operational role requiring strong analytical capability, judgement under ambiguity, and disciplined documentation. The role supports regulatory readiness by ensuring that market abuse controls are effective in practice, not merely designed.

Key Responsibilities

1. Market Abuse Monitoring (MiCA Article 92)

  • Monitor trading activity, orders, transactions, and communications for indicators of:
    • Insider dealing
    • Market manipulation (wash trading, spoofing, layering, pump-and-dump)
    • Dissemination of misleading information
  • Review alerts generated by surveillance tools and risk-based scenarios.
  • Apply prioritisation based on asset liquidity, volatility, user profile, and market context.

2. Analysis & Investigation

  • Perform detailed analysis of flagged activity using order-book dynamics, transaction sequencing, and behavioural patterns.
  • Assess whether behaviour constitutes actual or attempted market abuse under MiCA.
  • Distinguish legitimate trading strategies from abusive conduct.
  • Produce clear, auditable investigation narratives with evidence and conclusions.

3. Escalation & Regulatory Reporting

  • Escalate suspected market abuse to Senior Compliance / MLRO in line with procedures.
  • Support preparation of notifications to the National Competent Authority (NCA) where required.
  • Maintain complete records of alerts, investigations, escalations, and outcomes.

4. Surveillance Framework & Control Effectiveness

  • Support calibration and tuning of market abuse detection rules and thresholds.
  • Participate in periodic effectiveness reviews (false positives, missed scenarios).
  • Track emerging crypto-specific abuse typologies (cross-venue manipulation, listing abuse, oracle manipulation).
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of surveillance frameworks.

5. Regulatory Compliance & Governance

  • Ensure activities comply with:
    • MiCA Article 92
    • MiCA delegated acts and ESMA guidance
    • Internal market abuse policies
  • Support audits, supervisory requests, and regulatory reviews.
  • Provide structured documentation to regulators on request.

6. Cross-Functional Cooperation & Awareness

  • Cooperate with Compliance, Risk, Product, Listings, and Operations teams.
  • Provide market abuse input into token listings and product launches.
  • Stay current on regulatory developments and emerging abuse risks.
  • Promote a culture of market integrity and early escalation.

Must-Haves

  • 3–7+ years in market abuse, surveillance, or financial crime monitoring.
  • Experience in regulated trading, crypto, or financial markets.
  • Hands-on investigation and documentation experience.
  • Familiarity with EU market abuse concepts (MAR / MiCA).
  • Strong analytical and written communication skills.

Nice-to-Haves

  • ICA / ACAMS certification.
  • Crypto exchange or trading venue experience.
  • Experience with surveillance tools and data analysis.
